Snowboarding for beginners. How to start snowboarding?

25 January 2024

This exciting and emotionally intense form of outdoor activity has won the hearts of millions of fans in recent years. For many newcomers, getting into the world of snowboarding may seem like a daunting task, but with the right approach and some useful tips, this sport can become an integral part of your active life.

How to choose a snowboard?

Snowboarding is an Olympic sport that involves going down snow-covered mountains and slopes on a special board. Initially, it was only available to athletes, but later it became popular among extreme sportsmen, and now you can even meet children who are skillfully managing the board at the ski resorts of the Carpathians.

But if you are just taking the first steps in mastering this sport, you should know how to choose the right snowboard.

When choosing a snowboard, it is important to consider the rider’s height, weight and riding style. In addition, the following factors matter

  • board height;
  • shape and stiffness;
  • bindings;
  • footwear.

The choice of snowboard length is important and depends on the rider’s height and weight. If you are renting a snowboard, measure it by placing one end on the floor and checking if the other end reaches your chin. For beginners, it is recommended to choose a smaller snowboard for easier handling. Also consider your body weight:

  • 40-50 kg – size 130-140 cm;
  • 50-60 kg – 140-150 cm;
  • 60-75 kg – 150-160 cm;
  • over 75 kg – 160 cm and above.

Beginners who do not know how to choose a snowboard should pay attention to the shape and stiffness of the board. A classic shape and a soft or medium degree of stiffness make it easier to learn to ride. Even experienced riders choose such snowboards if they want to get more out of their descents and perform tricks.

Fasteners are a key aspect of safety. When renting, check their quality and integrity. Choose the size of the bindings according to the size of your shoes. Ask the consultant to show you how to fasten and unfasten them correctly.

It is equally important to choose the right snowboard shoes, as they affect safety and comfort. Shoes should fit properly, not be too tight or too big. When choosing them, pay attention to the quality of the lacing and binding. It is also worth buying thermal socks to ensure optimal air circulation and prevent hypothermia or overheating of the lower extremities.

Equipment and clothing: rules for choosing

The fashion and style of snowboarders is different from skiers, and they often choose their own unique outfits. For example, elongated jackets and wide trousers. At the same time, you can often see riders on the slopes in funny outfits and hats.

Clothing recommendations:

  • Jacket and trousers. Buy special outerwear for skiing. Make sure that the trousers are wide enough. They are worn over the top of the boot to prevent snow and moisture from getting in.
  • Hat and gloves. The hat should be made of fleece or thick wool for efficient air circulation. Mittens should be special to keep moisture out.
  • Color choice. It is important that the clothes are bright. This is a safety issue, as it makes it easier to perform rescue operations if someone is in trouble. Bright clothes are more visible on the slopes, especially in conditions of limited visibility.
  • Temperature conditions. Dress so that you are neither too warm nor too cold. Do not forget about a hat, buff and waterproof gloves. Keep in mind that you will be traveling on a lift, so do not overheat.

Protective equipment:

  • A helmet is an essential piece of protection for beginners.
  • A ski mask is an indispensable item in bright sunshine or heavy snowfall because it reflects light.
  • Knee pads – for those who are afraid of falls and want to avoid bruises.

First steps into the world of snowboarding

Now that you’re prepared, it’s time to learn how to snowboard. Ski resorts always have areas for beginners and special lifts. The most important rule is not to be afraid to try. Start simple – go for a walk, get a feel for snowboarding, and then try using a training lift. If you feel confident, move on to the main slope.

Preparation and first steps

Good snowboarding technique is all about the little things. At first glance, they may seem unimportant, but don’t neglect them.

First, learn how to fasten and unfasten your snowboard. It is most convenient to do it sitting down. Physical fitness is not necessary, the main thing is desire and lack of fear. Next, determine your support leg. Ask someone to gently push you in the back. The foot you step forward with is the supporting foot. It will be in front when you skate.

Stand on the snowboard, holding the middle of the board with one hand. Shift your body weight onto your heels. Spread your arms for balance, bend your knees slightly, and tilt your body forward. Push off – and you will begin to “ride” on the back edge. The first attempts should be made on a flat, gentle surface. Gradually try to move to the right and left, shifting your weight to your right or left foot. Correct your body movements. The technique on a snowboard is to control the board by properly distributing your weight, with your legs acting as a rudder.

There is also a second way to learn how to control a snowboard. To do this, the supporting leg is fastened on the board, and the other leg makes light pushing steps. Gradually make them longer and stronger. If you’re good at it, try riding with your unbuckled foot next to the binding.

Useful tip! All snowboarders fall and it’s normal. When you feel like you are about to fall, do not make sudden movements, relax your body and “sit down” on the fifth point. If you fall forward, try to turn so that you land on your side. Be careful and take your time. Remember, learning takes time. Enjoy every moment on the slope.
